Today, 27th December, is the birthday of the great Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib, whom I regard one of the greatest poets in the world. I had appealed that he should be given Bharat Ratna posthumously ( as it has been given to several others ) but I was ridiculed.
On this occasion I would like to express my deep lament over the plight of Urdu, which in my opinion has produced some of the greatest poetry in the world, in the land of its own birth, in the words of Sahir Ludhianvi :
” Jin shehron mein goonji thi Ghalib ki nava barson
Un shehron mein ab Urdu benaam-o-nishaan thehri
Azadi-e-kaamil ka ailaan hua jis din
Matoob zubaan thehri, ghaddaar zubaan thehri “
