Tariq_Bashir’s article in DailyO.in ‘ Being Pakistani : Raza Rumi’s new book and his never ending teenage angst ‘ reveals clearly how liberal Pakistan’s ‘liberals’ can be.
Raza Rumi , like Beena Sarwar, Najam Sethi, Imtiaz Alam, etc, is a highly respected, liberal journalist of Pakistan, and one must admire these journalists, as well as other liberals in Pakistan for their courage in speaking out against religious extremism in Pakistan, and for protesting against persecution of minorities as well as the right to dissent. These liberals of Pakistan realise that Pakistan shares a common culture with India, speaking the same language Hindustani ( called Hindi in India and Urdu in Pakistan ), love for Urdu poetry, Hindustani music, much common cuisine, common history, etc
But there their ‘liberalism’ stops. It is highly dangerous in Pakistan to go further and tell the whole truth, that Partition in 1947 was a historical British swindle, that the two nation theory on which it was based was bogus, that Gandhi and Jinnah ( and their associates ) were objectively British agents, that Pakistan is a fake, artificial entity ( I refuse to call it a country ) and in fact is part of India and was so since Mughal times, and that to progress we must reunite under a strong secular government which while upholding religious freedom, does not tolerate religious extremism, whether of the RSS type or Tehreek-e-Labaik type and crushes it with an iron hand, and rapidly industrialises and modernises the country ( see my article ‘ The Truth about Pakistan ‘ and B.N.Pande’s ‘ History in the Service of Imperialism ‘ online ).
This is the tragedy of Pakistani ‘liberals’. They can speak half truths, but dare not speak the full truth. They dare not speak publicly against the inhuman laws against Ahmadis ( Second Constitutional Amendment brought about by Bhutto, a man professing to be a socialist, and Gen Zia’s Ordinance XX ) and the blasphemy law ( used often against the miniscule minorities in Pakistan ). They dare not speak loudly against the bloodthirsty rascals in Tehreeke Labaik ( who deserve to be shot like mad dogs ) or a rascal like Amir Liaquat, whose TV show resulted in killings of Ahmadis. They dare not openly call Imran Khan and his Dr.Goebbels Fawad Chaudhry shameless frauds and hypocrites who denied exit visa to Asiya Bibi despite the Supreme Court verdict in her favour, who proclaim freedom of PTV while denying to Ahmadis and minorities the right to speak their grievances on it, and who threw out the highly respected economist Atif Mian from Pakistan’s Economic Advisory Council only because he was an Ahmadi.
The Pakistani ‘liberals’ are like Jinnah, who worked tirelessly for Partition and creating that Frankenstein monster called Pakistan, but after creating it realised what he had done, and then hypocritically gave a speech on 11th August 1947 saying that Pakistan is a country which has religious freedom, knowing that Hindus and Muslims were massacring each other in the name of religion.
I am sorry for Pakistani ‘liberals’, for they dare not be liberal if they know what is good for their health.
